Anatomy of a Hair Follicle

Hair : Made from a protein called Keratin. It has 3 layers. The innermost
layer is the medulla, the middle layer is the cortex and the outermost
layer is called the cuticle. Sebum : A natural
skin conditioner. The oil protects the hair and makes it shiny.
Follicle : Contains several different parts. At the base is a bulb shaped
structure containing the papilla. The papilla is fed by small capillaries
which bring it nutrients and carry away waste. Higher up it contains an
inner and outer sheath. The sheaths protect the hair while it is under
development and shape and guide it. Sebaceous
Gland : Produces Sebum. |
